Does Terry Gross read this blog?

Play it: Hip-Hop History on Fresh Air

All this week on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, it's Hip-Hop week, and their programming syncs up almost too well with my first 3 loops I've posted (based on Jeff Chang's Can't Stop Won't Stop.... ok, so she probably just read his book, I know!) Monday featured a new interview with the godfather of hip-hop Kool DJ Herc, and rebroadcasts archived interviews with Grandmaster Flash and Grandmaster Melle Mel. Tuesday was all about Def Jam: Russell Simmons, Run-DMC's Darryl McDaniels, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy. Wednesday moved the West Coast with Ice-T, and Ice Cube.

Today (Thursday,) it moves inexplicably to Will Smith, so we'll stop it at Wednesday. Hearing Terry Gross talk to Rap artists is an inneresting exercise... my favorite is one of her last questions to Ice Cube: "So I'm wondering how do you pronounce your name, is it Ice Cube, or is it Ice Cube?"

In sync with this as well, I just did a guest DJ piece for Dallas Hudgens on his Drive Like Hell site which boils down the first 13 years of hip-hop in the New York area (NYC Da Place To Be - 1975-1988.)

For those wondering where Loop 4 (1992-2001) is, I misplaced my notes for it and recently found them, so once things die down a bit, I'll get back to it.
