When a Dove is not a pigeon

An essential addition to the parade of great albums coming down the pipe is Doves Some Cities, coming March 1. Thanks to the fact that it's being released in the UK next week, NME is streaming the whole album for free. You can count it, along with Bloc Party's Silent Alarm, as an album of the year candidate already. Most Brit-Pop salivaters are awaiting the new Coldplay, but this one, by all early indications, has them beat.

In advance of the album is the new single "Black and White Town" which was just added to Rhapsody today. The opening chord progression had me thinking Motown, specifically Martha and the Vandellas' "Heatwave (Love is like a)" (I hear a mash-up, kids,) and then pours itself into a dreamy bliss and bittersweet meloncholy lament over living in a small town. Give it, and the whole album, a listen and you can see why it's flies higher then it's big-city-living-bloated-park-bench-mooching cousin.

And, wouldn't you know it, they have their own blog.
