Pop! goes the playlist

Brendan Benson has messed up my listening habits lately. I got into his latest release (The Alternative To Love) and realized my long lost love for power pop. It's a pandora's box for me, and once it's opened, I'm lost to anything else for awhile... so forgive my self-indulgent turn here at going geek on Power Pop and all it's glory in the next few posts.

In the meantime, though, if you haven't already, you should acquaint yourself with Benson's The Alternative to Love, as while it isn't necessarily Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend, it's probably this decade's power pop gem, and it (along with The New Pornographers) might help start another power pop revival like we saw in the 1990s with Matthew Sweet, The Posies, Teenage Fanclub and Jellyfish.

If that would happen, I'd be in heaven. Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" changed my entire outlook on music.

Yet I actually haven't listened to much BB except for "Spit It Out," which is great. Thanks for the nudge.

Yeah, you know it's interesting that this album has some Sweet parallels... especially "The Pledge" which sounds like it's right out of the In Reverse sessions.

But ultimately Benson's not as heartfelt nor does he have the wreckless guitar which mark Sweet's best work.

Now that I've lifted up the rug, I've noticed there are quite a few Power Poppers currently churning away under the radar.
