If you've seen the many year-end lists, none of the finalists will be too surprising... usual suspects Sufjan Stevens, M.I.A., Animal Collective, Bloc Party, Antony & the Johnsons, Fiona Apple, Kings of Leon, etc. Since the Shortlist Prize's last award was issued in November of 2004 (to TV on the Radio) this inagural award had a longer time period to choose from, so we also get The Arcade Fire in there as well.
Judges nominating albums include artists as diverse as Beck, Elton John, and ?uestlove (The Roots) along with The O.C. folks Josh Schwartz (creator/producer) & Adam Brody ('Seth',) KCRW music director Nic Harcourt, and of course Pitchfork founder (and editor-in-chief) Ryan Schreiber. In Pitchfork's take on the noms, they point out that you should check out who all the judges nominated, as some are surprising. ?uestlove has both The Mars Volta and Bright Eyes in his noms.
