Play it: "Will There Be Big Rigs in Heaven" Buck Owens & His Buckaroos
Sad news today... country music legend Buck Owens died today. Owens was best known for his humorous hosting of the television show Hee-Haw, but he was an innovator and a rebel in the world of Country music. He's the main instigator for the 'Bakersfield sound' which added electric guitars and a rock backbeat to country music mostly - a reaction against the slick, string-laden Nashville sound popularized in the 50's and early 60's. He, along with Merle Haggard, brought this sound to the mainstream. Owens himself had a string of 15 consecutive number one hits in the mid-'60s.
I grew up on country music, and Owens was one of the few that I still cherish. Between that and my memories of Hee-Haw, I'm truly saddened by his passing. We'll never get to hear him and Roy Clark sing "Pickin' and Grinnin'" ever again.
