Ear on TV: Week of January 8

While there's not a lot of performances this week, the quality makes up more then enough for the quantity. This week begins The Shins' onslaught leading up to the release of their new album, Wincing the Night Away (January 23,) as they make their first ever Saturday Night Live appearance this coming Saturday. While the movie Garden State certainly helped with some fortuitous exposure, this much more polished release has them poised to break out in 2007 - meaning you'll see them quite a few more times here.

Elsewhere, The Hold Steady take their incredible live show to Late Show With David Letterman Thursday, and Canadian indie darlings Islands will both dazzle and possibly confuse listeners on Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson Friday night. Believe me, you don't want to miss either of these.

Monday, January 8

Did you watch the full SNL show with the Shins? I am trying to figure out the name of the next-to-last song that they played. The last song was "New Slang," but I can't figure out the one before it...

They only played two songs, so the next-to-last song would be the first song, which was "Phantom Limb" (their debut single, out today.)

I really enjoyed that one. Thanks for picking out the song name.
