Ear on TV: The Week of July 7

Most the talkies are still on vacay, but thankfully Conan O'Brien's pasty complexion requires that he stay indoors and entertain us this week, so we're treated with a few new performances. Topping the list is Little Jackie, the hip-hop-pop duo of singer-songwriter Imani Coppola and programmer Adam Pallin who bring their act to Conan on Tuesday.

The Brooklyn duo samples classic R&B rhythms with a hip-hop slant not unlike the retro chic stylings coming out of the UK in droves (Amy Winehouse, Estelle, Adele, Duffy, Lily Allen, etc,) as evident on their infectious lead single "The World Should Revolve Around Me" -- from the album The Stoop, out tomorrow. Most folks may remember Imani Coppola from the 1997 rap hit "Legend of a Cowgirl," which listening to now has me wondering how eleven years went by so fast.

Elsewhere, Ovation continues their month-long American Revolutionaries series with documentaries on Thelonious Monk (the Clint Eastwood-produced Straight, No Chaser,) Miles Davis and Kurt Cobain. The Last 48 Hours of Kurt Cobain makes it's premiere on Saturday, but it's been available on YouTube for a long time now (broken up in nine pieces -- Part 1 below). Courtney Love and surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic all declined to be interviewed, and there's no music from the band licensed for the piece, but there's still plenty to draw interest, including a lot of input from ex-Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, who spent a surprising about of of time with Cobain in his final days.
