The holiday archetypes are all there. A bah humbug / Grinch (Sue? Check). The naive child full of hope / Cindy Lou Who (Brittany? Check). Caroling, tree decorating, a couple Christmas miracles, smother it in cheese and chase it with some sap. Boom... X-mas special. "A Very Glee Christmas" seems almost entirely inspired by animated specials, which sort of works in that Sue and Brittany are kind of cartoon-like anyway. Still, the episode manages to also squeeze in some of the sadness and/or loneliness of the holiday (just a smidge... don't want to any channel changing).
The Glee Christmas album has been out for a few weeks, and the thing I took away from it listening to it prior was, man... good thing you buried k.d. lang singing "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch, as it's the only rendition you'd want to hear again. Imagine if they'd lead with that one?
