Music on TV - Week of 04.23.12: Jack White, Roy Orbison

Jack White cuts it close on The Colbert Report, with special taped performance to air Thursday night.

When looking for source material in the world of rock, it's hard to find one better than the painful end to a relationship. Jack White has that in spades, between the dissolution of both The White Stripes and his marriage to model Karen Elson, the subject of loss and its scattershot aftermath is all over his solo debut -- which feels weird to say, since it feels like he should've have had several solo releases by now. Released this week, Blunderbuss is chock full of stories detailing a man scorned by his love. White and Elson's split was reportedly amicable and the two remain in good standing (like White was with his previous ex and White Stripes bandmate, Meg White) and White swears up and down that Blunderbuss has little to do with Elson, which may be true, as much of the content seems pointed more at his other ex and White Stripe bandmate, Meg White. When he appears on The Colbert Report Thursday, perhaps our idiosyncratic host can crack the always elusive White via the back channels of satire. Truthiness be told.

Meanwhile, Roy Orbison gets dug up from the Austin City Limits archives and given a new coat of paint. His original 1982 broadcast represents a turning point for both ACL and the artist, putting the concert series on the map and breathing new live into the legendary performer's career. The performance has been remastered and edited, making an already must-see performance that much more must-see-ier (that's right, look it up!).
