Now Downloading: New Releases 10.26.10

Reissues, reissues, reissues galore! Oh, yeah, Bryan Ferry got most of Roxy Music back together for his latest solo release, and Animal Collective's Avey Tare give us something to tide us over until the next AC release (or, rather, the next Panda Bear release). And reissues, reissues, reissues (Apple Records!).

Playlist: New Releases 10.26.10

Bryan Ferry - Olympia
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

There's a lot of expectation behind this release, thanks to the reuniting of Roxy Music elements Bryan Ferry, guitarist Phil Manzanera and, most notably, Brian Eno, so it's odd to find it such a laid back release, in both sound and promotion. (To top it off, it's been eight years since Bryan Ferry has released an album of original materials!) To that end, there's more than a few comparisons to Roxy Music's last release, Avalon (even though it was Eno-less). Other big name guests include Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, Groove Armada and members of Scissor Sisters.

Avey Tare - Down There
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Funny thing about Avey Tare releases is that unlike Panda Bear's solo efforts, it always feels like something's missing. The songs are there, but the one-sided approach to AT's songs feel flat in comparison. There's plenty here to love, though, even if there's not as much as an Animal Collective or Panda Bear release.

Ear On TV: The Week of June 25

The prolific Ryan Adams returns with a new album tomorrow that is sort of a return to the alt.country focus of his much lauded debut, Heartbreaker. The album's title, Easy Tiger, serves as a mantra to the hyper-kinetic songwriter who's spread himself pretty thin since his reach-for-the-golden-ring album Gold in 2001. Couple that with his recent sobriety and you have Adams' most focused release since his debut. To get an idea of what to expect Wednesday night on Letterman, check out this earlier performance of album opener "Goodnight Rose" on The Henry Rollins Show from a couple months ago.

Also gracing Letterman's stage is Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry, who's latest solo release (Dylanesque - out tomorrow,) is made up entirely of Bob Dylan covers. Never one to play it straight, Ferry ups the irony of the album's title by making sure none of the songs sound at all like Dylan. Meanwhile, The Henry Rollins Show features one of my heroes, Robyn Hitchcock, along with his backing band The Venus 3 which features REM's Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin.
