Now Downloading: New Releases 08.02.11

The dog days of summer are upon us, which means new releases are kind of dried up for a bit. But there's still some quality stuff to sift through. The 5th (and, it turns out, final) release from Robert Pollard's Boston Spaceships, a great reissue of Archers of Loaf's cult classic debut, plus new albums from Fruit Bats, Spencer Krug's Moonface, Fountains of Wayne, Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter, Collections of Colonies of Bees, Buffalo Killers, Mariachi El Bronx, John Hiatt, The Ettes, the last recordings of Screaming Trees, a Drive-By Truckers greatest hits along with a deluxe edition of Arcade Fire's The Suburbs.

Boston Spaceships - Let it Beard

Boston Spaceships - Let it Beard
Since the "breakup" of Guided By Voices in 2005, Robert Pollard has had a spotty record with the multitudes of releases thrust upon his cult-like following. The one reliable project during this period has been the Portland-based satellite Boston Spaceships, with drummer John Moen (The Decemberists, Dharma Bums) and Chris Slusarenko (late-era Guided By Voices, Sprinkler) providing the other two-thirds of the band. Like Guided By Voices in past years, Pollard has been using Spaceships as his more pop-oriented outlet, and the four albums (and one live release) have all been fairly focused affairs with nary a need for editing. But with The Who still very present in Pollard's DNA, a double album seemed likely, and so with Let it Beard we have what seems to be Pollard's most ambitious project since 1990's Same Place the Fly Got Smashed. The extended format lets Slusarenko & Moen work magic with some Pollard weirdness, throwing plenty at the wall to see what sticks. There's a lot to like here, and, as with any lengthy Pollard release, there's a couple that will likely leave some scratching there heads. If there's one criticism of Let it Beard, it's that the best of the song are sequestered on Side 2 (Side B?), with only the Big Star-ish "Make a Record for Lo-Life" hinting at the wonders ahead. And the second side is full of them... "Chevy Marigold," "Toppings Take the Cake" and "Tabby and Lucy" all are Pollard at his best. Since it's a double album, there's plenty of room for guest guitarists, with Pollard pulling in the likes of Colin Newman (Wire), J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate), Mick Collins (Dirtbombs) and even GBV classic's Mitch Mitchell. All of them lend meat to their songs, but it's J. Mascis who is most noticeable, saving the going-nowhere track "Tourist UFO" with a signature blistering-guitar solo that threatens to blow any speaker in playback.

(Since I started writing this, Pollard has announced that this is the last release for Boston Spaceships, so I guess we can expect a big reunion tour in another six years or so?)

Archers of Loaf - Icky Mettle (Deluxe Remaster)
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Archers of Loaf - Icky Mettle (Deluxe Remaster)
"And there's a chance that things'll get weird... yeah, that's a possibility," sings Eric Bachman on the opening track from 1993's cult classic, Icky Mettle, predicting both the songs that would follow and much of their ensuing career. The noise-pop outfit had an interesting five years, unfairly living in the shadow of Pavement, before drummer Mark Price developed severe carpal tunnel and the band called it quits. Now they're reunited, touring the country some 13 years later, and Merge Records has given their cult classic debut a long awaited reissue, complete with Bob Weston remastering the songs. The second disc includes the great EP* Vs The Greatest of All Time along with a collection of singles that previously were collected on Speed of Cattle. So for those new to Archers of Loaf, this is the ultimate introduction. But even for those, like myself, who already had all of these recordings in some form or another, having it all together, remastered in one attractive package, makes this a must have for any Loaf head out there.

*My second favorite EP of the 90s behind (ahem) Pavement's Watery, Domestic. (There's that pesky Pavement leaving shadows again.)

Now Downloading: New Releases 09.21.10

This week's new releases is like honey spread between two big slices of 7-grain bread. Sandwiched between two high profile weeks, it's easy to get overlooked, but there is something sweet and sticky here. Or something. I'm grasping at straws, aren't I? This week features TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek and a slew of friends as Maximum Balloon along with the latest from Robert Pollard's Boston Spaceships, Swans, Sharon Van Etten, Margot & the Nuclear So & So's, Shit Robot, Michael Franti with Spearhead; a collaboration between John Legend and The Roots; and the sparkling debut from Frankie Rose & the Outs.

Maximum Balloon - Maximum Balloon
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Maximum Balloon - Maximum BalloonBetter known as TV on the Radio guitarist and producer Dave Sitek, Maximum Balloon at times sounds a lot like TVOTR, only without any left turns. Unlike Sitek's more challenging band, MB could find its way on to the radio, especially the opening number "Groove Me" (featuring some singing from rapper Theophilus London, see video below). TVOTR vocalists Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone lend vocals, along with David Byrne, Karen O, Holly Miranda, and Little Dragon. It's great at what it does, even if it might not end up being something you go back to over and over.

Boston Spaceships - Our Cubehouse Still Rocks
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Boston Spaceships - Our Cubehouse Still RocksA release from Boston Spaceships has been closest thing to a Guided By Voices recording we've had since Robert Pollard broke up the legendary band. Perhaps it's fitting that with Our Cubehouse Still Rocks, we've got the best album since that breakup, and it coincides with a bonafide Guided By Voices reunion. From the chorus of "Bet he runs" in the opener, "Track Star," all the way to the sure to be live classic "In Bathroom (Up Half the Night)," Cubehouse aims to please even the most fair weather Uncle Bob fan.

Now Downloading: New Releases 03.03.09

Some would have you believe there's just one release this week, but there is so much more than just what's playing on Letterman. New releases from Neko Case and Boston Spaceships hold most of my interest, but there's also fine releases from Bell X1, Marissa Nadler, The Boy Least Likely To, Wild Light, Angus and Julia Stone, and the soundtrack and score to Watchmen (which I'll hopefully have something more on tomorrow).

Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Neko Case - Middle CycloneNeko Case has a supernatural command of nature. Seriously. The last two times I saw her live, her voice caused the sky to open and dump rain, hail, small rodents, what have you, upon the quickly dispersing crowd. With her latest, Middle Cyclone, she's taken it one step further and become the weather, specifically, becoming a tornado in the album's opener "This Tornado Loves You." The song comes from a dream Case had where she was approached by a tornado, but it's Case's voice that seems like it's from a dreams, always soaring over whatever style of song that suits her whimsy. Here she picks up where she left off with Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, keeping one foot in the alt country world, but stretching that genre into all directions, and always anchored with her way with lyrics. And while much of the album delves in her own mythology, there's also a more plaintive line like "the next time you say 'forever' I will punch you in the face," that jumps out of the poetic fabric. And while her voice is always center stage, the accompanying cast is sure hard to ignore, with work from M Ward, Garth Hudson (The Band,) and members of Giant Sand, Calexico and Los Lobos. Cyclone continues her streak of fine solo releases.

Boston Spaceships - Planets Are Blasted
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Boston Spaceships - Planets Are BlastedOne of the pleasant surprises from last year was the debut of what just might be Robert Pollard's new Guided By Voices, Boston Spaceships. Comprised of ex-GBV Chris Slusarenko, drummer John Moen (Decemberists, Dharma Bums) and of course Pollard himself, the trio is the closest thing to sounding like a band since the breakup of GBV*. It's telling that the lead single, "Headache Revolution," was written during the GBV years (during Isolation Drills, to be more exact,) as the band is the new vehicle for Pollard's more GBV/classic rock leanings. Released just five months after Brown Submarine, Planets are Blasted fine tunes some of the whimsy of that first release (aside from opener, "Canned Food Demons," naturally) for what could almost be called a 'tight set' of 35 minutes. It's hit it and quit it all over again, and while it's still not up there with an Alien Lanes or Bee Thousand, it feels like the start of something great. I hope Pollard and co. keep building on what they've produced so far.

"Big O Gets and Earful" [mp3]

*I realize it's hard for a lot of folks to tell the difference between Pollard solo and Pollard w/ anyone, but trust me, there is.
