Now Downloading: New Releases 03.27.12 - Justin Townes Earle

I'm mostly back after an Amazon-related debacle. You'll notice there's no more links to Amazon here going forward, which has been a hassle, but the switch to in links to emusic, Insound and others should be better in the long run for users. I'll grant that Amazon was convenient, but a case can be made that they aren't good for the user or the artist. Missed The Shins last week, but our return is marked with Justin Townes Earle and Miike Snow, so it can't be that bad. Also of note this week are releases from the Seattle hip hop THEESatisfaction, La Sera (Vivian Girls bassist Katy Goodman), Paul Weller, Retribution Gospel Choir, Poor Moon and the Mars Volta.

Playlist: New Releases 03.27.12: Spotify

Justin Townes Earle - Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About me Now
Purchase via emusic / itunes / Stream via Rhapsody / Stream via Spotify

cIt's odd that it takes a move to London for Justin Townes Earle to sound more like his old Memphis home than ever, both in horns and attitude. Sadly, most of the stylistic change for Earle on Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now is feels a bit stagnant and predictable, unlike his previous offerings (especially 2010's excellent Harlem Blues River). Thankfully, even a predictable JTE release can work some magic (see "Memphis in the Rain"), even when it's only 30 minutes in length.

Justin Townes Earle, "The Good Life"

Miike Snow - Happy to You
Purchase [mp3 vie emusic] / Stream via Rhapsody or Spotify

Miike Snow - Happy YouKnowing two-thirds of Miike Snow is producers Chris Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg (Bloodshy & Avant -- hitmakers for Britney Spears ["Toxic"], Madonna and Kylie Minogue), it's hard to believe that Happy You should feel so restrained. Their sophomore release,Happy You, is still full of potentially exciting hits (see "Waves," "Paddling Out), but so much of the release just washes over you and is forgotten after listening. I'm still listening, though.

Now Downloading: New Releases 01.25.11

While last week was the first bonafide release day of the year, this week marks the first mother lode drop of 2011, including what many are already designating the album of the year in Destroyer's Kaputt. Besides that, there's Gang of Four's first album of new material in 16 years along with the latest from Iron & Wine, Deerhoof, Lila Ices, John Vanderslice, Sic Alps, Fujiya & Miyagi, Wanda Jackson, Thank You, Ben + Vesper, Say Hi, Delicate Steve, Phil Manley, Apex Manor, Cloud Nothings [pauses for breath], a nice Light in the Attic compilation for Vagrants and a yawn-worthy cash grab attempt from Cold War Kids (see my Kings of Leon-ized preview from earlier in the week).

Playlist: New Releases 01.25.11

Destroyer - Kaputt
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Destroyer - KaputtWithout warning, the first dip into Dan Bejar's tenth album as Destroyer can be shocking. The associations saddled to the 80s sound that Bejar employs for his latest poem soundtrack are mostly bad hair, bright suits and cocaine. But after a couple listens, with help from the soulful vocals of Vancouver native Sibel Thrasher, an effects-laden trumpet and Bejar's signature couplet tossing, the uneasy feeling becomes something something quite transcendent.

Bejar lists Roxy Music's Avalon and the arrangements of (Canadian born) jazz pianist Gil Evans as his influences for the music of Kaputt (a title borrowed from an Italian novel he confesses to have never read), and the tousled-hair troubadour even recorded the vocals while lying down on a sofa to further relax the setting. Besides Avalon and Evans, Kaputt had me searching my library for recordings from Style Council, Talk Talk and especially the Thomas Dolby produced tracks from Prefab Sprout (Steve McQueen aka Two Wheels Good). The album ranks with Streethawk: A Seduction as Bejar's magnum opus. As usual, no matter your association with the music, the lyrics are the real show, and Bejar obliges with several lines that help encompass the album and act as an aide for lazy reviewers (guilty!).

"I write poetry for myself." and "I sent a message in a bottle to the press.
It said, 'Don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves'... I've thumbed through the books on your shelves."
(from "Blue Eyes")

"Winter, spring, summer, and fall, animals crawl towards death's embrace." (from "Song for America")

"Wasting your days chasing some girls, alright/ Chasing cocaine through the backrooms of the world all night." and "Sounds, Smash Hits, Melody Maker, NME, all sound like a dream to me." (from "Kaputt")

Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Iron and Wine - Kiss Each Other CleanI previewed Kiss Each Other Clean a couple weeks back, but since then I've gotten to be quite cozy with the latest from Sam Beam, aka Iron & Wine, and perhaps it deserved some more virtual space. Besides being a continuation of the reinvention I&W took on with 2007's The Shepherd’s Dog, KEOC shows Beam more at ease with the new tricks at his disposal with a bigger budgeted studio. More than just adding bass and drums, Beam is building a mosaic of sound to back his songs. Horns are even brought in to punch up some songs, but unlike Bejar's use, they never seem to jive 100% with the concoction that Beam is trying to mix. It's an intoxicating collection of songs, though, that rank with his best releases.

Deerhoof - Deerhoof Vs Evil
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Deerhoof - Deerhoof Vs EvilIt's eventually going to sound silly to say, but with every Deerhoof release, you come to expect the unexpected. And that's saying a lot for a band that released an album a year from 1999-2008 that they can change it up and yet, somehow you can always tell it's them within a few seconds of hearing them. It's been nearly three years since their last, which has apparently allowed the band time to condense their output into the most focused, melodic and yet still weirdest collection of songs they've released yet. And, as is often the case with Deerhoof, the joyous wild abandonment means if you listen closely, you can actually hear the band grinning through the speakers. Aside from the horrible album cover, the only thing that keeps Deerhoof vs Evil from being one of their best is that the album is missing a song or two that isn't continually tearing itself apart in the name of idiosyncrasy, because the prog-pop balance that Deerhoof dances on feels like it's a losing battle for the 'pop.'

Gang of Four - Content
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Gang of Four - ContentWith album titles like Entertainment!, Mall, Shrinkwrapped and now Content, it's hardly news to anyone that Gang of Four has always been taken with the concept of consumerism. Hearing the great "Damaged Goods" backing an ad for Microsoft's Kinnect understandably threw fans for a loop, but it all feels part of this same fascination. Go4's first album of new material in 16 years continues the trend, and Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill are still bitter about all the bands that have cashed in on Entertainment!'s blueprint. The first half of Content is a triumphant return, the best they've sounded since 1981's Solid Gold, but then the album kind of falls apart after that, never quite realizing the opening's promise. It's a solid enough return, though, that I hope King & Gill can keep the band together. Even without original members Hugo Burnham and David Allen, the new rhythm section (Tom McNeice and Mark Heaney) do well to make us forget the legendary talents.

Now Downloading: New Releases 06.15.10

It's another week where I'm so far behind in everything possible that I probably should've just skipped this post. But for some reason, this this is the one that gets the most email response. New releases this week feature the latest from Foals, Pernice Brothers, Robyn, Drake, a return of Devo, Punch Brothers, We Are Scientists and Gaslight Anthem.

Playlist: New Releases 06.15.10

Foals - Total Life Forever
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Foals - Total Life ForeverAn album that opens itself to you after a few listens, Total Life Forever is a major break from the previous efforts of Foals. Gone for the most part are post-punk disco rhythms with a more measured approach in its place. The songs unfold slowly and surely, expanding the band's sound tenfold. Besides a musical growth, Foals has added an emotional center that was lacking in the cold and calculated Antidotes. A few listens to "Spanish Sahara" go far in that direction. Given the leaps and bounds they've made since Antidotes, the best thing about Total Life Forever may be projecting where they end up next.

Foals - "Struck Dumb"

Pernice Brothers - Goodnight, Killer
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Pernice Brothers - Goodbye, KillerThere's much here that lines up nicely with the best of Joe Pernice's output (like the ode to Valley of the Dolls author "Jacqueline Susann"), but ultimately Goodbye, Killer suffers from a lack of something, and I'm guessing it's guitarist Peyton Pinkerton, who is absent from a Pernice Brothers recording for the first time.

Kaki King - Junior
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Kaki King - JuniorKaki King's guitar and songwriting degree of difficulty has often drawn comparisons to Jeff Buckley's chops, and with good reason. With her fifth album, King swings a bit more commercial, easing back a bit on the finger flourishes while pushing her vocals. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, in theory, but it does serve to amplify the difference in strength of guitar versus her vocals. Because, while King has Buckley's chops, she doesn't have his voice... her vocals are more akin to Laura Veirs -- strong enough for folk rock, but a bit too wispy for the soaring terrain she carves out on guitar. Highlights are the opener, "The Betrayer," and "Falling Day."

MGMT - Congratulations
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

MGMT - CongratulationsOn one hand, I have to applaud MGMT for sticking to their pysch-pop guns and not attempting to mimic another "Time to Pretend" or "Kids." On the other hand, a good chunk of their uncompromising ends up being pretty aimless and disjointed. Considering the aforementioned fans' favorite songs were written five years ago, and everything since has been more of the meandering psych pop variety, we really shouldn't be too surprised.

Now Downloading: New Releases 11.03.09

We've officially moved into the gift-oriented release schedule, filled with deluxe reissues, box sets and other compilation/soundtracks to help (trick?) the average schmo get a gift for the music lover in their life. There's a couple gift choices from the archives of Nirvana, soundtracks from Fantastic Mr Fox, Glee, NCIS and Aqua Teen Hunger Force -- which is actually a X-mas album, and my fave of the bunch. Of the few new releases, there's ones from Julian Casablancas, Weezer, Molina & Johnson and Girls in Trouble.

Nirvana - Bleach [Deluxe]

Nirvana - Live at Reading
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Nirvana - Bleach - Deluxe EditionIf the gussying up a deluxe edition of an album made for just $600 seems a bit like a gratuitous cash grab, nobody will blame you. But Bleach's place in the the canon of rock is unquestionable, namely as a blueprint for what was to come, but also as a raw document of Kurt Cobain's talent, before Dave Grohl was added on drums. Remastering the album tracks added some punch, but the real jewel here are the live tracks, also pre-Grohl, from a performance in Portland in February of 1990, where the songs are brought to life.

Download: "Scoff" [mp3]
Download: "About a Girl" [mp3]

Nirvana - Live at ReadingSpeaking of live tracks, this document of their 1992 set (Live at Reading is Nirvana at their peak, and at their most jovial. The band headlined a lineup that included Nick Cave, The Beastie Boys, and NW friends Mudhoney, Screaming Trees & the Melvins. But it was Nirvana everyone came to see, and they didn't disappoint, from the moment Cobain is wheeled out in a hospital gown, to the closing feedback, the entire set is electrifying, the way we all should try and remember them. (This is the Nirvana album to get of the two, by the way.)

Julian Casablancas - Phrazes For The Young
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Julian Casablancas - Phrazes for the YoungIt's been three years since The Strokes disappointing First Impressions of Earth, and this solo release from the band's frontman does little to change our belief that the band's best days are behind them.

Now Downloading: New Releases 09.01.09

It's a slow one this week, which is fine considering the reunion extravaganza happening next week (Polvo, Os Mutantes). As such, we'll poach Jay-Z's latest (which is available exclusively this week on Rhapsody) and take a gander at A.A. Bondy's latest. They Might Be Giants will get their own post (once I have a chance to listen / see) next week, but their latest kidtastic adventure is available on iTunes this week. Outside of that, Datarock's latest finally gets physical release here, and there's a greatest hits compilations for both Drive-By Truckers and The Apples in Stereo.

Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3Normally, a Jay-Z release just kind of goes through me like cheap beer. I drink it down and I'm in the bathroom an hour later, and that's that. But this one is sticking to me for some reason, in part because it has the feel of real instruments for much of it. The opening track, "What We Talkin About", even employs Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson fame (now of Empire of the Sun), who can be heard jackin' the TV on the Radio-like chorus. That's right, I said TV on the Radio. In the past week, Jay-Z's been on Realtime with Bill Maher, danced and gave props to Grizzly Bear, and now is being featured in a dope Rhapsody commercial. It's like Jay-Z started reading Stuff White People Like to prep the marketing of the album. It worked on me, I guess, as I'm digging this album, Stylistically, it's a bit too all over the map for me to declare it a great album, but it holds my interest, which the first Jay-Z thang for me since Danger Mouse mashed him up with the Beatles for The Grey Album.

A.A. Bondy - When The Devil's Loose
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

A.A. Bondy - When The Devil's LooseWhen A.A. Bondy ditched the electric Nirvana-ish guitar rock of his band Verbena in favor of a rootsy acoustic approach for his solo album, it was quite a change. Seeing him a few times since on tour, you could sense the angst and noise was creeping back in, and while When the Devil's Loose is still a mostly quiet affair, some of that angst has made it's way back in. The death and religion themes, meanwhile, have remained the root of Bondy's content, from Verbena until now, and outside of Mark Lanegan, there's not many that can do it better.

Bendy guitars are back: Polvo's In Prism

In less than two weeks, Polvo will release their best album yet, In Prism. That it comes a dozen years after their last (Shapes) only makes it that sweeter. The album opens with my favorite song right now, "Right the Relation," throwing a gauntlet down that's answered by tracks like "Beggars Bowl" (download) and the closing stunner "A Link in the Chain" (which I liken to The Eagles "I Can't Tell You Why" being re-arranged by Sonic Youth circa 1991 - really).

You can pre-order the album now, but certainly take advantage of the fact that Merge Records are streaming the album for free.

Download: "Beggar's Bowl"

Seeing them on their reunion tour last year was one of my concert going highlights for 2008, and I look forward to seeing them again October 6, at the Crocodile (where I first saw them back in '93 or '94).

Now Downloading: New Releases 08.25.09

It's a so-so week on the whole, but for Seattle acts, it's a pretty good one. It sees the release of an EP from Blue Scholars, and the second album from The Maldives. Arctic Monkeys release their third, but we covered that a few weeks ago, and Matisyahu yesterday, and beyond that there's also releases from Imogen Heap, Soulsavers, Still Life Still, a great box set for Woody Guthrie, EPs from Blitzen Trapper and Asobi Seksu along with a live album from Cheap Trick.

Blue Scholars - OOF EP
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Blue Scholars - OOF EPThe Blue Scholars keep getting better with each release. With the EP OOF, the hip-hop duo are stretching out their beats, mixing in new sounds with panache. "Bananas" might be the track to break them nationally (that and their distribution deal with Duck Down). To celebrate the release, Sabsi and Geologic played a series of surprise shows throughout the day, tweeting their locations in advance. It should also be mentioned that Geologic spent some of his youth in Hawaii, a place that has a wide range of Pacific Rim cultures. The title of the EP OOF, is a variant of a Samoan swear word translated as "F*ck You." Aloha!

Cheap Trick - Sgt Pepper Live
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Cheap Trick - Sgt Pepper LiveFor a someone who's album buying experience began in the era of both Cheap Trick and the bad idea that was the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton), this release both tickles and frightens me a bit. On the surface, it's a completely unnecessary endeavor. But when you dig a little deeper... oh, who am I kidding, it really is a waste of time. Yet, I find myself listening to it over and over... it's like the late night bad movie you can't turn off because it's got Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins in it.

Now Downloading: New Releases 08.18.09

I was camping the past few days, ready to skip this week's post, but there's just too much here to ignore, even if too busy. I poached the latest from both Brendan Benson and The Cave Singers in previous posts, but that still leaves new ones from Jay Reatard and Pissed Jeans. Since time is limited, I'm doing some cut-n-paste w/ the Benson poach and I'll give a little love to one more.

Brendan Benson - My Old Familiar Friend
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

When Benson formed The Raconteurs with Jack White, it was assumed more folks would find out who the power pop songsmith was. While that assumption is mostly true, White still dominated the press for the band. I liked The Raconteurs' modern take on classic rock well enough, but if it was going to keep Benson from releasing more solo releases, The Raconteurs indeed needed a break. The title of Benson's 4th solo release, My Old, Familiar Friend, sounds like Benson reconnecting with his solo career, and much of the songwriting reflects the old Benson we know and love. But this time, he's got some new tricks up his sleeves, namely a bigger studio budget, and why the hell not. After years of toiling in obscurity, there's bound to be more attention on him this time and what a better time to clean up and put on a pretty face. And there's plenty to be excited about here, between the infectious opener "A Whole Lot Better,", the soulful "Garbage Day" and the strong "Feel Like Taking You Home." The only fault here is the songs don't much relate to each other, a strength of previous releases.

Pissed Jeans - King of Jeans
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Pissed Jeans - King of JeansWhen Sub Pop signed Pissed Jeans for their debut, I understood the attraction, given their history and all. I didn't much care for their debut, that is until I saw them live last year at the Sub Pop 20 festival -- then it all made more sense. And this second release (King of Jeans) reinforces that feeling, that Pissed Jeans are like a more marketable version of former Sub Pop giant Tad. One listen to "She Is Science Fiction" and the lumberjack roars... without all the flannel and... um... mass.

Now Downloading: New Releases 08.04.09

While the past few weeks have been hot, the releases have been all smoke but no fire. This week, there's plenty of flames between the full length debut from Vancouver, BC's Japandroids finally getting released on this side of the border and new releases from Fruit Bats, Modest Mouse, YACHT, Throw Me the Statue and Joe Pernice releasing a Novel Soundtrack (perhaps I should've trademarked the name!). Also, two releases from frontmen going solo in disguise (sort of). My Morning Jacket's Jim James releases an EP under the name Yim Yames while Interpol's Paul Banks releases a full length under the moniker Julian Plenti.

Japandroids - Post-Nothing
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Japandroids - Post-NothingFinally, the throwback guitar and drums duo from Vancouver sees their full length debut released in the states after buildig plenty of 'next big thing' buzz upon it's release North of the border. Japandroids trade in the kind of teen angst that I can still get behind, and perhaps that's because they rely on late 80's (Husker Du) and early-to-mid 90's (Superchunk) crunchy guitar pop sounds. It's tempting to lump them into the lo-fi No Age/Wavves noise rock movement, but there's a lot more epic pop at it's base. And while the youthful exuberance, especially demonstrated at their recent Capitol Hill Block party gig, might seem distant to an aging (yes, aging!) rocker like myself, but Brian King & David Prowse aren't just young, dumb and full of cum. Witness the album's highlight "Young Hearts Spark Fire," with the lyric 'We used to dream/ Now we worry about dying/ I don't want to worry about dying, I just want to worry about those sunshine girls.' That's some forward thinking from lads who are barely into their twenties. The other highlight, "Sovereignty", tells of distance from one's home, a mature theme, but sprinkled with enough timely f-words to illustrate the youth/experience juxtaposition that Post-Nothing has in spades.

Fruit Bats - The Ruminant Band
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Fruit Bats - The Ruminant BandSub Pop may have lost The Shins, but Fruit Bats' latest, while guaranteed not to sell nearly as much, makes for a nice consolation prize. The band had plenty in common with the former S/P big sellers even before singer/songwriter/guitarist Eric Johnson became a member of The Shins. The Ruminant Band is the fourth (third w/ Sub Pop) album that Johnson & co. have been delivered, and it's a continuation of what I could only call 'elegant pop,' this time helped out by Califone's Tim Rutili and Jim Becker. There's nothing exhilarating about a FB release, but you don't always need that. Just some fine song craftsmanship and execution for another solid Fruit Bats release.
Highlights: the title track and the twang-y "Hobo Girl."

Joe Pernice - It Feels So Good When I Stop
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Joe Pernice - It Feels So Good When I Stop (Novel Soundtrack)Of course I'd be remiss if I didn't address this execution of a former staple of this site, the Novel Soundtrack*. Joe Pernice (Pernice Brothers, Scud Mountain Boys) has always seemed like a novelist dabbling in pop music, and now the tables are turned. His first novel, It Feels So Good When I Stop, is released this week, and so is this album, meant as companion. Instead of just compiling the songs mentioned in the novel, Pernice puts his on spin on several of them, ranging from Del Shannon's "I Go to Pieces" to Todd Rundgren's "Hello, It's Me". Also sprinkled in is Pernice reading passages from the book. As you might already guess, the album doesn't work as well without the novel, but that's not its purpose. But Pernice fans who buy it are sure to want to pick up the novel, and vice-versa, I'm sure, and that's something, right?

*thus spake drake used to be the number one search result, but my NS posts have been few and far between of late.
