Ear on TV: Week of 01.04.10: Vampire Weekend

We've barely broken in the new year and one of 2010's most anticipated releases is already upon us. Vampire Weekend's sophomore release, Contra, hits shelves next Tuesday, but they're already sharing it in entirety via their MySpace page, and it's not too far a cry from their much loved debut (Vampire Weekend).

In support of the release, these Columbia University chums play Letterman on Tuesday night, playing their version of world music dressed up in preppy cardigans and scarves.
Their Upper West Side Soweto, this time with Contra, includes a tad bit more experimentation, recalling in title and (sort of) theme The Clash's Sandinista!, except instead of gun-toting rebels, Contra appears to be about a girl. These well-off New Yorkers have little else in common with St. Joe Strummer and co. -- in fact singer Ezra Koenig's lyrical gift and vocal ease align him more with Paul McCartney. Like Macca, the Koenig is able to move us while still singing from the perspective of a class of society far above our pay grade.

Moving from starched white collar to t-shirt and ripped jeans, Vancouver B.C.'s young duo Japandroids take a much different approach to their music. Stripped down to just guitar and drums, the band is punk rock at it's core, yet when they're singing "I don't wanna worry about dying, I just wanna worry about those sunshine girls" on the excellent track "Young Hearts Spark Fire," they don't feel that far off in spirit to the much richer Vampire Weekend. The duo, Brian King on guitar and David Prowse on drums, tear apart Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Monday night, singing a song (likely, the aforementioned "Young Hearts Spark Fire") from their critically acclaimed debut, Post-Nothing.

Finally, if you've been thinking like I have that there's probably been a bit too much Elvis Costello this season on Spectacle: Elvis Costello with..., you might be hesitant to see that this week's guest is, in fact, Elvis Costello. Well, what if I told you that Mary-Louise Parker is in Costello's interview chair? Stepping in last minute for Elton John, the Weeds star surprisingly held her own. I guess it shouldn't be that surprising, if you've read any of her music pieces she's written for Esquire magazine. Still... might be a bit too much Elvis.

Now Downloading: New Releases 08.04.09

While the past few weeks have been hot, the releases have been all smoke but no fire. This week, there's plenty of flames between the full length debut from Vancouver, BC's Japandroids finally getting released on this side of the border and new releases from Fruit Bats, Modest Mouse, YACHT, Throw Me the Statue and Joe Pernice releasing a Novel Soundtrack (perhaps I should've trademarked the name!). Also, two releases from frontmen going solo in disguise (sort of). My Morning Jacket's Jim James releases an EP under the name Yim Yames while Interpol's Paul Banks releases a full length under the moniker Julian Plenti.

Japandroids - Post-NothingFinally, the throwback guitar and drums duo from Vancouver sees their full length debut released in the states after buildig plenty of 'next big thing' buzz upon it's release North of the border. Japandroids trade in the kind of teen angst that I can still get behind, and perhaps that's because they rely on late 80's (Husker Du) and early-to-mid 90's (Superchunk) crunchy guitar pop sounds. It's tempting to lump them into the lo-fi No Age/Wavves noise rock movement, but there's a lot more epic pop at it's base. And while the youthful exuberance, especially demonstrated at their recent Capitol Hill Block party gig, might seem distant to an aging (yes, aging!) rocker like myself, but Brian King & David Prowse aren't just young, dumb and full of cum. Witness the album's highlight "Young Hearts Spark Fire," with the lyric 'We used to dream/ Now we worry about dying/ I don't want to worry about dying, I just want to worry about those sunshine girls.' That's some forward thinking from lads who are barely into their twenties. The other highlight, "Sovereignty", tells of distance from one's home, a mature theme, but sprinkled with enough timely f-words to illustrate the youth/experience juxtaposition that Post-Nothing has in spades.

Fruit Bats - The Ruminant Band
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Fruit Bats - The Ruminant BandSub Pop may have lost The Shins, but Fruit Bats' latest, while guaranteed not to sell nearly as much, makes for a nice consolation prize. The band had plenty in common with the former S/P big sellers even before singer/songwriter/guitarist Eric Johnson became a member of The Shins. The Ruminant Band is the fourth (third w/ Sub Pop) album that Johnson & co. have been delivered, and it's a continuation of what I could only call 'elegant pop,' this time helped out by Califone's Tim Rutili and Jim Becker. There's nothing exhilarating about a FB release, but you don't always need that. Just some fine song craftsmanship and execution for another solid Fruit Bats release.
Highlights: the title track and the twang-y "Hobo Girl."

Joe Pernice - It Feels So Good When I Stop
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Joe Pernice - It Feels So Good When I Stop (Novel Soundtrack)Of course I'd be remiss if I didn't address this execution of a former staple of this site, the Novel Soundtrack*. Joe Pernice (Pernice Brothers, Scud Mountain Boys) has always seemed like a novelist dabbling in pop music, and now the tables are turned. His first novel, It Feels So Good When I Stop, is released this week, and so is this album, meant as companion. Instead of just compiling the songs mentioned in the novel, Pernice puts his on spin on several of them, ranging from Del Shannon's "I Go to Pieces" to Todd Rundgren's "Hello, It's Me". Also sprinkled in is Pernice reading passages from the book. As you might already guess, the album doesn't work as well without the novel, but that's not its purpose. But Pernice fans who buy it are sure to want to pick up the novel, and vice-versa, I'm sure, and that's something, right?

*thus spake drake used to be the number one search result, but my NS posts have been few and far between of late.

It's raining in Vancouver, but I don't give a f...

Another Capitol Hill Block Party leftover... here's video of Japandroids great performance at CHBP day 2. Just a minute of the great song "Sovereignty," featuring the lyric in the headline. Note that I'm getting crushed against the barricade as I attempt to film... I put all cameras away immediately after this and concentrated on keeping my intestines from getting crushed.

CHBP - Day 2 in the books

My second day of Capitol Hill Block Party is marked by a lack of Main Stage action, which was due to the sudden denial of a press pass. So instead, I faced my biggest fears and ventured into Neumo's to try and take some flashless photos in the hot, sweaty and (more importantly) dark venue. Since it was so hot, the stage lights were kept to a minimum, leaving a lot to be desired for photography. After Future of the Left's powerful set, I moved outside to Vera's stage and was rewarded with great stage lighting for Noisettes and Japandroids' (pictured) sets.

More photos to come later, as I wade through them.

CHBP: Main Stage Parkin'

The Capitol Hill Block Party starts Friday, and this year's lineup is obviously a reaction to last year's frat-friendly line-up. The last couple years for CHBP have been trying. Not only has the fest been overcrowded and congested, but the audience themselves were problematic. I even swore I wouldn't come back, but three things have changed this year that has me thinking that it will work.

1) The main entrance and main stage are no longer right next together (FINALLY).
2) They've beefed up the perimeter to keep folks from sneaking in, thus reducing the overcrowding factor.
3) The acts booked are not the kind that will attract that crowd. You know, the ones that came for just Vampire Weekend and/or Girl Talk (The Gossip probably come the closest of this year's lineup).

Related to #3, this year's lineup has some serious plums that I'm excited for. Also, for the first time in any festival going experience, I find myself parked at the main stage on my sked breakdown. There are a couple of notable exceptions, of course, namely THE BAND I MOST WANT TO SEE: The Future of the Left (playing at Neumo's, Saturday @9PM).

Then of course, there's the chance to see legends Sonic Youth and The Jesus Lizard, along with Built to Spill, Black Lips, Deerhunter, Micachu & the Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

Photos to come in the next week... hopefully I'll get a few like this one of Tim Harrington (Les Savy Fav) from last year's festival:
