Sonicsgate: Sherman Alexie & Seattle Hip Hop

Now that baseball season is officially over, it's hard to ignore that another season of NBA is in full swing -- a painful reminder of what was taken from us in Seattle. And now, of course, there's a documentary to go along with it.

Sonicsgate made it's way online last month and while the film has a lot of issues (its in desperate need of art direction, for one -- the Powerpoint-like graphics "needed a fresh pair of eyes," as we like to say), its a compelling tale of a franchise, a city and the competing interests that tear them apart. Poet/author Sherman Alexie ends up being the soul of the film, while the tandem of Clay Bennett and David Stern end up playing the part of villain. (Part 1 of the film below).

Besides Sherman Alexie, the other best part of Sonicsgate is the music, putting Seattle hip-hop front and center. Much of the film's score is the work of Jacob Dutton, aka Jake One, borrowing heavily from his soulful White Van Music. Other 2-0-Sixers include local mainstays Common Market, Blue Scholars, The Saturday Knights, Dyme Def, Grayskul and others.

Now Downloading: New Releases 08.25.09

It's a so-so week on the whole, but for Seattle acts, it's a pretty good one. It sees the release of an EP from Blue Scholars, and the second album from The Maldives. Arctic Monkeys release their third, but we covered that a few weeks ago, and Matisyahu yesterday, and beyond that there's also releases from Imogen Heap, Soulsavers, Still Life Still, a great box set for Woody Guthrie, EPs from Blitzen Trapper and Asobi Seksu along with a live album from Cheap Trick.

Blue Scholars - OOF EP
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Blue Scholars - OOF EPThe Blue Scholars keep getting better with each release. With the EP OOF, the hip-hop duo are stretching out their beats, mixing in new sounds with panache. "Bananas" might be the track to break them nationally (that and their distribution deal with Duck Down). To celebrate the release, Sabsi and Geologic played a series of surprise shows throughout the day, tweeting their locations in advance. It should also be mentioned that Geologic spent some of his youth in Hawaii, a place that has a wide range of Pacific Rim cultures. The title of the EP OOF, is a variant of a Samoan swear word translated as "F*ck You." Aloha!

Cheap Trick - Sgt Pepper Live
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Cheap Trick - Sgt Pepper LiveFor a someone who's album buying experience began in the era of both Cheap Trick and the bad idea that was the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton), this release both tickles and frightens me a bit. On the surface, it's a completely unnecessary endeavor. But when you dig a little deeper... oh, who am I kidding, it really is a waste of time. Yet, I find myself listening to it over and over... it's like the late night bad movie you can't turn off because it's got Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins in it.

More on the radar (and in the mp3 player) this week:
Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer EP/ "Black River Killer" [mp3]

Now Downloading: New Releases 06.12.07

Another low key week as we look towards a hopeful Summer. The new burgeoning Seattle hip-hop scene climbs a few notches with Blue Scholars latest album, and new releases from Queens of the Stone Age, John Doe and Scissors for Lefty round out the highlights.

Album: Blue Scholars - Bayani

Blue Scholars - BayaniSeattle hip-hop has been waiting to pop "since big butts and teen spirit" and at the forefront of this 2-0-Sickness is Blue Scholars. Their self-titled/released debut created a slow groundswell, with several groups vying for the crown of being the next Mix-a-lot. Blue Scholars have that opportunity, but their far too principled to make their mark in that way. They turned down many label offers and instead created their own label (RAWKUS) and made an album that remains very Seattle-based in it's lyrics and scope. Not much chance for them to break out based on it's lack of universality, but MC Geologic and DJ/producer Sabzi understand that there's still matters to be taken care of on the streets of Seattle, and if that means invoking the name of Sonic great Xavier McDaniel ("Fire for the People,") dropping zip code clues ("North by Northwest,") street names, landmarks, neighborhoods, and telling the story of the WTO battle in Seattle from a native's perspective ("50K Deep,") so be it. Sabzi's beats are still fresh, and Geologic's lyrical turns hit their mark and those not in the 981XX ZC will either have to wait, or spend some time googling the references, because they're still all ours (for now.)

More: 'Bayani' means 'the divine word' in Farsi (Sabzi's Iranian) and it means 'hero' in Tagalog (Geologic's Phillipino.)

Album: Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris

Queens of the Stone Age - Era VulgarisYou get the feeling QOTSA frontman Josh Homme spent a lot of time honing the sound on this album, as it's stoner licks are sticky icky. But once you get past the incredible assortment of chunky goodness for your ear, the songs themselves leave something to be desired, like he's treading water or just bored with the process. As a result, there's a lot of throwing things on the wall to see what sticks. And when you got the sticky icky, your wall can look a little disorganized when you're through. If "Make it Wit Chu" seems like a fine exception, it's probably because it was originally a Desert Session song.

Album: John Doe - A Year in the Wilderness

John Doe - A Year in the WildernessThe latest from this half of X is a synthesis of his past: Punk roots over rockabilly polished with country blues. Doe seems to have finally carved out his sound outside X, and with help from Dave Alvin (guitar,) Kathleen Edwards, Jill Sobule, Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), Greg Leisz and Aimee Mann, has probably his most focused solo album yet. The duet "The Golden State" (with Edwards) is a soulful highlight here, a song that's so good it's likely to define his solo career. While he turns up the amps a bit more ("Hotel Ghost," "Unforgiven" - w/ Mann) there a lot of songs that Nashville should love ("A Little More Time,") instead of the sorry lot that passes for country music these days.
