Britt Daniel (Spoon) and Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs) Form Band Conceived From My Dreams

Britt Daniel (Spoon), Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks) and Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs) are Divine Fits.
Umm... yeah. This should be good.

Fresh off the announcement that Handsome Furs are no more, Dan Boeckner shows good reason why that (and the less recent break up of Wolf Parade) is not such a bad thing. Enter Divine Fits, the new collaboration between Boeckner and Spoon's Britt Daniel. Throw in New Bomb Turks' Sam Brown, and it looks like Merge Records has another indie supergroup on their roster.

Announcing themselves first via tweet, the Los Angeles-based trio expect their debut to come out later this year on Merge Records.

Now Downloading: New Releases 06.28.11

Summer is supposedly here, but you'd never know it here in Seattle. It's been a typical June-uary here, with overcast skies and breezy temps requiring extra layers of clothing. It's the sort of weather that drives folks indoors, indirectly creating music scenes. The latest few years of bad weather in the Pacific NW might be responsible for the latest run of decent-to-great music coming out of the 2-0-6, and Sub Pop is on the front line to pluck the flora springing through cracks in the gray, gray pavement. This week, Sub Pop debuts their first real hip-hop offering, Shabazz Palaces, an album threatening to finally break the 2-0-6 nation wide. Further up north, and also on Sub Pop, is the now post-Wolf Parade act from Dan Boeckner, Handsome Furs, with his wife Alexei Perry. Other new releases of note this week come from Gillian Welch, Jolie Holland, Mighty Clouds, SBTRKT, Patrick Wolf, Gomez, a surprising great release from Beyoncé and an indie rock tribute to Buddy Holly.

Shabazz Palaces - Black Up

Shabazz Palaces - Black Up
Ishmael Butler's rise as Butterfly in Diggable Planets was a source of pride for Seattle hip-hop acts and fans. That Diggable was a NY-based act was only a technicality, like with another former Garfield High School student before him, Jimi Hendrix, Butler was entrenched in the 2-0-6. Unfortunately, after Diggable Planets went out of favor, Butler's return with the funk/rap act Cherrywine failed to connect, making Butler seem like potential fodder for the VH1 'where are they now' pile.

It's no wonder then that Shabazz Palaces had such a secretive beginning, with Butler taking the mysterious name Palaceer Lazaro, and burying his lyrical experiments under layers of psychedelic sounds and murky beats on their first couple EPs. There were no photos or interviews, just packed performances in clubs usually reserved for Seattle's indie rock brethren. There was something there, though, in those EPs that got perceptive listener's attention, and with their full length debut on Sub Pop, Black Up, a bit of the mystery has been lifted. "Clear some space out/ So we can space out," implores Butler during "Recollections of the Wraith" and the album does just that, letting Butler work his lyrical magic around an impressive array of experimental samples and beats. Hip-hop purists are bound to call this "Rap for rockists who hate rap," but it's an undeniable treat for any real fan of music.

Handsome Furs - Sound Kapital
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Handsome Furs - Sound Kapital
With Warf Wolf Parade now on indefinite hiatus, Dan Boeckner's side project Handsome Furs (with wife Alexei Perry) is now simply the project. As such, it's not surprising that Sound Kapital -- their third long player -- is easily their most accessible album thus far. Written entirely on keyboards, Boeckner's compositions sound a bit like an alternative reality where The Clash's Joe Strummer decided to go the synth route (and lost his British accent, of course). I say Strummer, because Boeckner repeatedly borrows the Clash frontman's "Straight to Hell" phrasing style throughout the release (see the excellent opener "When I Get Back" along with "Serve the People," specifically). Boeckner didn't leave the guitars completely behind, thankfully, as it's no coincidence that the album highlights feature guitars (the driving "Damage" and "Repudiated"). Wolf Parade fans will think Sound Kapital plays it a little too safe, and their right, but as a transition record, there's a lot to like here going forward now that the band has Boeckner's full focus.

Now Downloading: New Releases 03.10.09

It's not as deep a week as in the past, which is just fine with me, as there's at least the latest from Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band and Handsome Furs to gawk at. Other noteworthy releases are the dually disappointing ones from Bishop Allen and Cursive, along with new ones from Anni Rossi, Julie Doiron, Propagandhi and Elvis Perkins.

Handsome Furs - Face Control
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Handsome Furs - Face ControlIf Wolf Parade, Handsome Fur (Dan Boeckner's day job,) is influenced heavily by Bowie-era Brian Eno, then Handsome Fur's svengali is the late Martin Hannett, whose work with Joy Division inspires a lot of the sound of Face Control. This second album is a far more enjoyable experience than Plague Park, and shows that perhaps Boeckner has enough songs to fuel both his half of WP and his side/love project HF, but the band still feels like a work in progress. I'm looking forward to the next advancement, but for now, it's nice distraction while we await the next Wolf Parade release.

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band - Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band - Mt. St. Helens Vietnam BandAlready a sensation before even playing the first show, the self-titled debut release from Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band proves that the band is definitely for real. (Naturally, with hype, there's already some backlash.) The angular guitars and controlled chaos from the local five-piece takes unexpected twists but always returns to a hummable chorus. It's noise rock with a classic rock approach, and that just might be my favorite approach to indie rock. The winner in the 'I-get-to-record-the-next-big-thing' sweepstakes here is Scott Colburn (Animal Collective, Arcade Fire,) and he does his best to get out of the way and let the band's song work their magic. It's a great debut, but you might not want to take my word for it, as they've seemed to have just recorded the music I want to hear, ruining my objectivity entirely.

Beads - No One Knows
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Beads - No One KnowsAnother local product, Beads is the solo project of The Blakes' Snow Keim, and the debut, No One Knows finds him sounding especially vintage, pulling a quieter Beatlesque sound. The album seems to have been recorded (with help with brother and fellow Blake Garnet) as cathartic release for some serious sh*t that Keim went through in the past year or so, and as far as tough times go, it has to sound better than it felt.

Now Downloading: New Releases 05.22.07

When you get down to it, the only release I really need to profile this week is The National's Boxer. But it'd be criminal not to throw some love to the debut from The Handsome Furs and the latest from Wheat. Also coming out this week is Voxtrot's full-length debut, but we breached that one a week early.

Album: The National - Boxer

The National - BoxerAround four years ago when I saw The National play The Tractor Tavern (October 23, 2003) here in Seattle, there were maybe a dozen people in the audience, which allowed for an intimate evening with Matt Berninger's lyrics that's probably not as easy to get nowadays (see La Blogtheque's amazing Takeaway Show from March.) Of course they've come a ways since Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, but the same reflective look at city life is there in the lyrics, and Boxer might even be closer to Sad Songs in theme then 2005's equally amazing Alligator, which put them on the map. There's nothing that grabs you as instantly as Alligator's "All the Wine," but this one works better as a whole, and like the best albums, reveals more and more through repeated listens. The first four songs are The National at their best, starting with the slow building opener "Fake Empire," which like a few songs on the album, benefits from the piano play of Sufjan Stevens (the song even ends in a Stevens'-like orchestrated flurry.) "Mistaken for Strangers," the first single, then ups the post-punk ante and contains some of Berninger's best lyrical turns. "Brainy" continues the great ride, with drummer Bryan Devendorf driving and pushing right into the next great song "Squalor Victoria."

I've only had the opportunity to listen for the past week or so (it gets better and better,) so I feel at a loss to say more, just that I'm looking forward to getting even more familiar.

Album: Handsome Furs - Plague Park

Handsome Furs - Plague ParkDan Boeckner is best known for being one-half of the songwriting team that makes up the band Wolf Parade, Boeckner being the one who hasn't collaborated with nearly every Canadian side project out there. Boeckner's side project Handsome Furs is a duo with his fiancee (a short-lived title) Alexei Perry, who mans drum sequencer. Whereas Spencer Krug's side projects march in all directions upbeat, Boeckner doesn't mind stripping his songs down a bit, and follows more traditional song structures. The opener "What We Had" is an obvious pick, with lyrics like "It’s the old flame and diamonds/But there’s nobody here just empty space" it evokes old country... matter of fact, ease off on the distortion and add a steel guitar (and real harmonica) and you'll whistle this on the dusty trail. "Dead + Aural" is the other track I suggest you digest, if not the whole album. It proves Boeckner certainly holds up his end of Wolf Parade. His voice still reminds me of Beck, though.

Album: Wheat - Everyday I Said A Prayer For Kathy And Made A One Inch Square

Wheat - Everyday I Said A Prayer For Kathy And Made A One Inch SquareWow, that album title is really long.... it's choice, and the whole 'throw the songs on the wall and see what sticks' ethos feels like a reaction to their major label dance with mainstream, that crashed and burned. They signed to John Mayer's imprint on Columbia, toured with Toad the Wet Sprocket and even had a song on Elizabethtown, but you'd never believe it from listening from this album. Is that good? Is that bad? Depends on your perspective, but I think there's a common ground between the two that would find a pretty good audience right here. "move=move," "i had angels watching over me" and "what you got" walk this tightrope really well, I just wish so much of the album didn't feel like it was constantly trying to slide out of view. Maybe the next one will stick.
