Kiddie soap music

Music from the O.C. Season 2, pt 1

So, my wife has a thing for the kiddie soaps, you know... Dawson's Creek, Felicity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a brief affair with The Gilmore Girls and more recently The O.C.

I just bided my time doing other things when they came on, until I started to notice some music from my mix tapes was wafting out from the T.V. Was that Spoon I just heard? That's The O.C.? Whoah, they're playing Beulah? Camera Obscura? Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse? (Sure, the last two don't sound so revolutionary right now, but last year when they were on The O.C. they were just starting to get regular college radio airplay.)

So I've been watching this year religiously just to hear what gets played, and compiling a playlist for the season. Last week's episode played one of my favorite private songs from last year (Mark Lanegan's great "Strange Religion"), the kind you don't just share with everybody because it's yours. Well, thanks Josh Schwartz, it's out there now.

Anyway, there's been too much good music, so I have to break it up for the first 10 episodes (11th is tonight.)

Already this season, four great bands have appeared on The O.C. (The Walkmen, The Killers, Modest Mouse, The Thrills) this season playing at the Bait Shop. Tonight features Rachael Yamagata ("Worn Me Down") playing at the O.C's version of Peach Pit: After Dark.

Of course, everyone's starting to pay attention now, so it's no longer such a surprise, but I'm still tuning in to hear what they'll play next.

Other kiddie soaps giving music love are: The Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill, Smallville, life as we know it

Note:
Updated playlist with Matt Pond PA's "New Hampshire" (wasn't in Rhapsody when I started playlist.) Slid him in at 15 after the illustrious A.C. Newman.
