Now Downloading: New Releases 02.22.11

After suffering through a lay-off after working for 15 years straight, I'm in desperate need of a vacation. So, starting today, I'll talking off this coming week to parts with little or no net access. It's not a very deep release week for music, so it makes it easier to keep it short looking at the latest release from Radiohead and the much hyped debut from Puro Instinct. Elsewhere, there's interesting releases from Tahiti 80, Danielson, Toro Y Moi, The Cave Singers and The Low Anthem.

Playlist: New Releases 02.22.11

Radiohead - The King of Limbs
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Radiohead - The King of Limbs
The King of Limbs, Radiohead's eighth long player, is easily the slightest release in the band's career, and yet it still works. Released again as a suprise to combat leaks, and mess with the music industry, TKoL is a mood piece, primarily. While it's tempting to compare it to the more recent and similarly released In Rainbows, TKoL harkens back to Amnesiac, only sounding a bit more like a transition record than a statement of sound. If this is merely a stop over in the journey to Radiohead's 'next,' then count me eager to get to the destination.

Puro Instinct - Headbangers in Ecstasy
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Puro Instinct - Headbangers in EcstasyEarly in 2011, this debut was getting 'album of the year already' hubris from music bloggers, which has turned out to be mostly hubris. The sisters (Skyler 16, Piper 23) may be leapfrogging over Seattle's own Smoosh as far as talented young sisters, but there's little here to warrant 'album of the year' talk. It's a nice entrance for the duo, but the tin-y production leaves a lot to be desired and contributes to many of the songs sounding the same after a while. The early 80s demo sound can only take you so far.

Music on TV - Week of 02.21.11: Destroyer

Dan Bejar and Destroyer to be on Fallon Tuesday, February 22, 2011
Merge Records is already having a great 2011, thanks largely to Arcade Fire's Grammy hardware pull, but also because of new releases from Destroyer and the label debut for The Mountain Goats, both bands of which make appearances this week.

Dan Bejar has assembled an 8-piece version of Destroyer to tour in support of the effervescent Kaputt which starts on St. Patrick's Day in the place of the band's birth, Vancouver B.C. (at the Crocodile here in Seattle, the next day, March 18, 2011). Before then, this edition of Bejar's Destroyer will give us a preview Tuesday night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Besides Merge acts Destroyer and The Mountain Goats (on Letterman Wednesday), the week is also highlighted by appearances from Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers (on Kimmel Wednesday), Bright Eyes (on Letterman Thursday) and The Strokes on Saturday Night Live.

Now Downloading: New Releases 02.15.11

February may be the shortest and weather-challenged month of the year, but 2011's version has already been both long on and warm to quality releases. I'm not even sure what that means, but it somehow still feels apt in introducing the latest offerings from PJ Harvey, Telekinesis, Drive-By Truckers, Twilight Singers, Bright Eyes, Lifeguards, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Asobi Seksu, Sonic Youth, Mogwai, The Dears, East River Pipe, Zooey Van Gooey and the debut from UK's Yuck.

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

PJ Harvey - Let England ShakeI can only imagine fans of PJ Harvey's raw guitar-based early releases (Dry, Rid of Me) will balk at Harvey's latest upon hearing that the most prominent instrument is the harpsichord. They'd be missing out, though, on what is surely Harvey's best release since then. While the raw lyricism of Let England Shake lacks the personal appeal of her laid bare offerings of old, her richly detailed look at warfare in relation to her homeland of England has it's own rawness to it that's hard to resist. Taking three years to research and five weeks to record (with frequent collaborators John Parrish, Bad Seeds' Mick Harvey and producer Flood), LES is an obvious labor of love for Harvey, with most the toiling occurring over the lyrics. To better tie the war theme with our current climate, she enlisted war photographer Seamus Murphy to shoot fairly abstract (and beautiful) videos for each of the 12 tracks on the album. Only four have been released thus far (see them here), but you can already feel a potential brilliance in the whole of them. They make an already powerful collection of songs hit that much harder.

Telekinesis - 12 Desperate Straight Lines
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Telekinesis - 12 Desperate Straight LinesAfter the levity of Harvey's release, Telekinesis' sophomore long player feels pretty light as a companion to highlight. To be sure, 12 Desperate Straight Lines is lacking in lyrical depth, but there's an infectious joy in this collection of songs that's hard to resist. Between the pop bursts of album highlight "Car Crash" and the Cure-cribbed "Please Ask for Help," there's a lot to smile at, even if after a few listens it can start to sound a bit similar.

Chuck vs the Cat Squad - Charlie's C.A.T.S.

Just in time for Valentine's day comes another installment of 'The Women of Chuck,' the recurring excuse to have hot guest stars kick ass -- and this time multiplied by three. Leading up to what's bound to be a wedding finale, we get the rare Sarah back story, this time the Charlie's Angelsesque C.A.T. Squad, featuring the return of the Carina (Mini Anden), and the additions of Mercedes Masöhn and Episodes' Mircea Monroe as the other 'cats.' They obviously had a lot of fun lampooning Charlie's Angels (or, perhaps D.E.B.S. or even Exposé) and it proved to an acceptable diversion, possibly even introducing another episode arc-worthy baddie in the C.A.T.S. nemisis played by Lou Diamond Phillips.

Besides the C.A.T. Squad fight theme of Franz Ferdinand's "Turn it On," "Chuck vs the Cat Squad" utilized the new release from Telekinesis, 12 Desperate Straight Lines, closing the episode with The Cure-like "Please Ask For Help," a song I haven't been able to get out of my head since I first heard it a couple weeks ago.

Now Downloading: New Releases 02.08.11

It's another shortened week for releases, but sweet to be sure thanks to at least one world blazing release in the debut from James Blake. There's also some sweet sounds in the latest from Cut Copy, Akron/Family, Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker's David Lowery, ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Nicole Atkins, Motorhead, Ebsen and the Witch, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Over the Rhine, Teddy Thompson and advanced single from the upcoming Okkervil River release.

James Blake - James Blake
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

James Blake - James BlakeMoving deftly from the abstract dubstep work on three EPs in 2010 (CMYK, Klavierwerke & The Bells Sketch) the 22-year old James Blake's self-titled debut is so phenomenal in part due to it's warm soulfulness that's paradoxically bathed in the often cold unfeeling world of electronic-based music. To the uninitiated, it's just an amazing album feels like it's landed from another planet. For the rest who have been following Blake's rise, it's merely an enormous leap from amusing abstract art to fully realized artistic endeavor. When Blake's reworking of Feist's "Limit to Your Love" was released late last year, it was the first clue of what was to come, but as great as that subversion was, James Blake exceeds that promise with more to boot. Combining the vocal sensibilities of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Antony and the Johnson's Antony Hegarty, the album is both full of soul and experimentation. "Unluck" opens with an auto-tuned Antony Hegarty-like vocal workout, and the listener can never look back. Blake has confessed his vocal influences on this album are Joni Mitchell and Bon Iver, so it should come as no surprise then that the incredible Lindisfarne I & II sounds like an earth shattering outtake from Blood Bank. It's rare that an album can exceed the hype behind it, but Blake's debut does just that, only stuttering barely in the rare occation when the ambition of the song overshadows the songwriting ("To Care (Like You)"). It's an amazing debut that suggests an almost unfathomable career ahead.

Cut Copy - Zonoscope
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Cut Copy - ZonoscopeAustralia's Cut Copy's builds upon the breakout promise of their sophomore release (In Ghost Colours) with their third release, Zonoscope, similarly holding back on the hooks, but releasing them with full assault when adequately situated. The one exception this time out is "Where I'm Going," which starts out with Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting for the Man" before bursting into the rainbow harmonies of the Beach Boys for the rest of the song's entirety. It's a wholly infectious moment of the album that would make even Panda Bear blush. The rest of the album may not contain the highs of that track, but there's plenty that even the most jaded hipsters will find themselves tapping their fee and humming to, which is what we've come to expect from the electro-pop outfit.

Chuck vs the Seduction Impossible: Sexy Situation

Since we're done now with the original mapped out storyline for this season in Volkoff, consider this as a kind of a breather episode before they launch into whatever's next. It serves as a chance to shade in some of the characters we know less about, like Alex and, especially, General Beckman. The back story between her and John Laroquette's Roan Montgomery (backed by the appropriately cheesey Scorpions' Cold War ending saga "Wind of Change") was obviously the highlight here.

Besides the Scorpions, multiple seduction scenes were backed by the classic soul sounds of Charles Wright and The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band's "65 Bars & a Taste of Soul," qualifying as the longest combo of title and artist (not easy to tweet, that's for sure).

Ear on TV: Week of 02.07.11: Gang of Four

When the politically minded Gang Of Four debuted with the powerful Entertainment! back in 1979, the bomb that went off was more like a hand grenade, exploding years later as bands took up the Leeds quartet's sound and made it a commercial success. R.E.M. and Red Hot Chili Peppers enjoyed success incorporating some of Go4's post-punk funk agression, while more recent bands like Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads, Bloc Party, The Rapture and more have been far less subtle in their homage.

Now after 16 years of absence, songwriters Andy Gill and John King are back a new rhythm section and songs to reclaim their sound. From the opening salvo of Content's "She Said," it's obvious that age has done little to mellow the cult icons. On Tuesday, the band makes their first late night talk show appearance in 22 years, playing "You'll Never Pay For the Farm" on Letterman. Given the song's angry words for Wall Street, it's a given Gil and King won't be ringing any honorary opening bell while in town.

If Gang of Four's righteous anger has you on edge, why not grab your favorite smallish person and take in the unexpected treat of new Yo Gabba Gabba episodes this week. This week sees music performances from The Killers (Monday, doing "Spaceship Adventure), Band of Horses (Tuesday, doing "Nature") and Galaxie 500's Dean & Britta (performing “Let’s Ride" on Thursday). Here's a preview of The Killers' song written for the very special "Adventure" episode:

Elsewhere, this week finishes up with the increasingly less and less relevant Grammy Awards, highlighted by expected live performances from Arcade Fire, Janelle Monae and Cee Lo Green, breaking new ground by getting nominated for the F-word laden "F$%k You."

Glee "The Sue Sylvester Shuffle": Half-Time Spectacular

Glee's Ryan Murphy should send really send a check to Black Eyed Peas for setting an incredibly low bar for entertainment. Now Downloading: New Releases 02.01.11

While no match for the weight and girth of last week's mother lode, there are at least some new releases this week worthy of your ears. The third release from Brighton's The Go! Team headlines the week, along with the debut from Seattle's Campfire OK, and new releases from David Lowery, The Dirtbombs, Bardo Pond, MEN and North Mississippi Allstars.

Playlist: New Releases 02.01.11

The Go! Team - Rolling Blackouts
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

The Go Team - Rolling BlackoutsThe Go!Team's Ian Parton is less a DJ than some kind of master of sound collision. The soundscapes he conjurs up for each release often sound more akin to a mixtape than an album, and Rolling Blackouts is no exception. Parton and vocalist Ninja again build on the blueprint of their surprising debut, Thunder, Lighting Strike, but unlike their last offering (Proof of Youth) the emphasis is more indie rock than hip-hop for this round. To that end, they have guest turns from Deerhoof's Sartomi Matsuzaki ("Secretary Song") and Best Coast's Beth Costellino ("Buy Nothing Day") and Ninja only really throws down a couple of times throughout. It's a caffeine-infused pop wonder that's only weakness is with a couple instrumentals that just take the momentum out of the proceedings. The worst offender being "Lazy Poltergeist" which begs to end the record. The two songs that follow (the shoegazing title track and the inventive "Back like 8 Track") feel like bonus tracks as a result, when they deserver

Campfire OK - Strange Like We Are
Stream / Purchase [mp3]

Campfire OK - Strange Like We AreSeattle's beard rock scene has really taken off in the past few years, thanks in part to Fleet Foxes, The Cave Singers and, more recently, The Head and the Heart. Campfire OK is part of the same mold, mid-paced folk rock with emphasis harmonies, but add a more diverse instrumentation to the mix for something that has the potential to even make you forget there's a new Fleet Foxes record on the way. They're the perfect Doe Bay Fest type band, so it's no surprise their record release party is at Columbia City Theatre this Friday night, given it's history. It's a strong out-of-left-field debut that is already leaving me hungry for what they come up with on their next release.

Skins (MTV) "Chris": Little Blue Pill

Like with the premiere ("Tony"), "Chris" is a near shot-for-shot remake of the original, but considering that the source material was one of the highlights of the UK series' entire run (so far), it still resonated with me tremendously. It's always powerful when a character originally pigeonholed as a cartoon character turns out to be one of the tragic figure of the series. Of course the class clown has a story, and 'the tears of a clown' always manage to get us right in the old ticker. Hopefully those who have been turned off by Skins will begin to see it does have a heart, even if it's taken awhile for it to appear through cracks in the partying pavement.

Another reason this episode works is the music. The first episode was up and down in that department, but it's really starting to click like the UK original did. Of course, just having original music that isn't stripped out for the US airing puts them ahead of the BBC America's version. New Zealand's Lawrence Arabia has become the house band for MTV's Skins, placing two more tracks here. Toss in some well placed Sonny & the Sunsets, Baths, Fujiya & Miyagi and a couple more from The So So Glos. Chris' drugged out scene done to Starkey's "Fourth Dimension" was quite the trippy marriage of visual and audio.

Chuck vs the Push Mix: ...the solution to everything.

It took a compressed few episodes filled with oodles of required suspended belief to get there, but the payoff to the disappointing proposal interruptus of a couple episodes was worth it.

Ending with the proposal in the background of the floor waxing made it get a little dusty at Camp Drake, even with a cliche playing of The Naked and the Dead's "Young Blood" in the background. Besides the artful proposal, the other highlights were Awesome's "Awesome" holding his child and, of course, Jeffster! performing "Push It" in the maternity ward's waiting room -- right up there with "Mr. Roboto" from "vs the Ring."
