Music on TV - Week of 06.20.11: Archers of Loaf

Archers of Loaf play Fallon Friday, June 24

Fresh off a couple reunion shows (including the recent Sasquatch! performance we covered three weeks back), North Carolina's Archers of Loaf are answering their fans' call and now embarking on a full tour. To help kick it off, AoL is taking to the airwaves, playing Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Friday night, granting many a Loafhead's greatest desire.

On top of that, Merge Records has stepped up to reissue all four of their releases, including a special 20th anniversary edition of the noise pop classic Icky Mettle. For those not familiar with the Loaf, this will be the album to get as they'll be tacking on the great EP Vs the Greatest of All Time on it as well. We can expect Eric Bachman and crew to perform "Web in Front" from Icky Mettle, and we'll be chanting "All I ever wanted was to be your spine" before the night is over.

Meanwhile, the oft-mentioned Bon Iver has two appearances this week, hitting Fallon as well this week (Tuesday), but also sitting down for truthiness on the all of a sudden music-heavy The Colbert Report on Monday. Stephen Colbert is eschewing his normal author and politician guest run this week in favor of a week of musicians. This week The Colbert Report also welcomes Florence & the Machine (Tuesday), Talib Kweli (Wednesday) and the Black Belles (Thursday).

Elsewhere, there's Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder taking a break from the PJ 20th anniversary celebrations, going it alone with his ukelele on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Monday evening. Tiny Tim better watch out.

But the real pearl might just be the combination of alternative legends Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar) both making appearances on Fallon Wednesday night. Moore recently released an intriguing acoustic-centric release, Demolished Thoughts, easily the best solo release he's done yet. Mould, for his part, is out promoting his memoir See a Little Light, co-authored with rock scribe Michael Azzerad (Our Band Could Be Your Life). Mould must be sitting down for an interview, talking about his work with wresting's WCW and his late immersion into gay culture, but will he also be performing? Sitting in with The Roots? Must tune in to find out...

Ear On TV: The Week of June 11

Lately I'm wondering if I should bother even compiling this list, and instead just put up an ad for The Henry Rollins Show in it's place, as week after week, the most interesting going on is on IFC's Friday night talk show. This week, indie rock legend Bob Mould takes time out from writing about wrestling to play a couple songs in the show's studio. Mould and Rollins have a bit in common... both had a lot of angst in the eighties underground, and have come out twenty years later doing things no one would've predicted: Bob Mould as DJ (Blowoff) and Rollins as an empathizing talk show host. Speaking to that point, Rollins precedes the Mould performance with an interview with some veterans of the Iraq war. This is something close to Rollins heart, as he's spent a lot of time doing tours for the soldiers and visiting VA hospitals, and continues to champion their cause against an administration that seems to be abandoning them.

Elsewhere, ex Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrel has a new band (Satellite Party) and they take up residency on the Carson Daly Show with a three-night run, while UK popster Lily Allen is a last second addition to tonight's Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson.

I coulda sworn I heard cheering when Johnny fell off the cliff

Last week saw the DVD release of The O.C.: The Complete Third Season, and in anticipation of Thursday night's season premiere, here's a quick rundown on the music from last season and what to expect this season.

Playlist: The O.C. - Season 3

For the third season, the music took some interesting turns, including the incorporation of some legends of Post-Punk, a genre that historically has shied away from consumer driven products (like The O.C.) First off, Bob Mould (Husker Du) let his song "Circles" get chopped up to use to back Marissa's dramatic moments for an episode (3.04,) which isn't that weird when you consider Mould took a break from music a few years ago to write professional wresting scripts (gasp! Pro wrestling is scripted?) Later in the season Gang of Four contributed their song "I Love a Man in Uniform" (episode 3.11) and then Black Flag got into the act with "Wasted" (for episode 3.13.)

The Peach Pit... er... I mean Bait Shop only had two musical guest performances, coming from The Subways and the wonderfully eccentric Tom Vek (no word yet on who's going to be stopping by this season.) Elsewhere Rogue Wave became a sort of 'series band' contributing four songs (over four episodes) and the annual funeral music moment this year (Johnny's funeral) was backed by Sufjan Steven's beautiful (and long-titled) "For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti."

For the upcoming season, we can gather that there will be a theme of artists covering other artists, as the tracklisting from Music from the OC: Mix 6 (to be released 12/5) certainly suggests. Rogue Wave covering Pixies' "Debaser" and Band of Horses covering The New Year's "The End's Not Near" are the highlights that I see. Also, teen R&B singer Chris Brown will appear in seven episodes, playing "a geek" (Brown's description.) So as you can see, there's plenty to be excited about (musically speaking,) the upcoming season.

I'm in Mexico, but I've already seen the season premiere and have a report already to file (complete with sunburn and sand in shorts.)
