Yes!
Now if I could only get back the previous 12 hours, this would be a perfect season three. And did we really need to see Stahl reaching over to the empty part of her bed and smile? Point already made, no need to drive a tank through it.

Glee "Special Education": New New Directions
Acting as a near-mirror image episode to last year's "Sectionals," "Special Education" (how does that title even relate to this episode is beyond me) has New Directions back in competition. The best thing about competition is we get to see other Glee club/choirs, reminding us again how outrageous our weekly misfits are.
To help make the above point, Kurt assumes moving on to the boys academy he'd fit in having more people like him around him, but the Warblers are all about fitting in which, ironically for Kurt, is something he's not able to do so easily. Meanwhile, the other team their competing against, the Hipsters (which serve as a nice tribute to Young@Heart), fit nicely in the mold of last year's School for the Deaf. The fact that the competition ends in a tie is certainly a cop-out, regardless of the necessity in getting both to the next round for reasons concerning plot.
The songs complete the tracklisting for Glee the Music: Volume 4. Next week's episode incorporate the Christmas EP that was recently released.

Chuck Versus the Leftovers: Unexpected Guests
The Chuck mid-winter finale delivered answered some questions (Mama B's relationship to Volkoff, why Chuck's mom wiped the intersect, how he gets it back) and managed to keep the Volkoff-as-season-long-baddie intact. Throw in a couple of obvious pop-cultural references -- T2's "Come with me if you want to live," Morgan's on the nose Die Hard turn(s)-- and you have a fine, if somewhat muddled, way to end the year for a somewhat dissapointing season thus far for Chuck.

Ear on TV: Week of 11.29.10: Tim & Eric
Welcome to the post-Thanksgiving television landscape, littered with taped specials galore. Holiday specials are starting to trickle in, and the first, and likely weirdest, to air is the one hour Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Chrimbus Special, as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim Sunday night lineup. Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim have been boldly carrying on the Andy Kauffman aggressive anti-comedy tradition for several years now, especially on their five years running Tim and Eric Awesome Show series.
Expect their holiday special to be irreverent, bizarre, and feature celebrity guests like John C. Reilly (Dr. Steve Brule, "For your health!"), Zach Galifianakis (Tairy "Lil' Dancing Man" Greene -- he gives his seal of approval in video below) and if we're lucky, Tiny Ted Danson. But as great as their work in Awesome Show has been, the best thing they've done might be their recent Old Spice commercials, featuring Terry Crews (no, he's not on a horse... but he is on a tiger.)
This week, though, the queen of the taped special is the overexposed Katy Perry. The pop tease is performing on three cleavage-filled specials this week, including the annual breastacular Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Tuesday night (pictured). Because who better to perform in front of lingerie models than the Miss Pop Cleavage herself?
Fittingly, it's her cleavage that's gotten her into more trouble than anything she's said or done. Take for instance her promotional photo for the taped special VH1 Divas Salute the Troops (airing Sunday night). Her breasts in the promo poster reportedly were photoshopped smaller so as not to draw more controversy, as her bosom is wont to do (right, Elmo?). But oddly enough, it was Perry who asked for the reduction. (See photo below for breast reduction result.)

The other taped special this week for Perry is a 30 minutes of concert footage from a London Live appearance, which will be aired Friday night as part of VH1's Friday Night Alright series. Expect the hits and plenty of costume changes. Oh, and cleavage.

Now Downloading: New Releases 11.23.10
It's Black Friday week, so the new releases are minimum, but a bomb has been dropped by a certain Kanye West. Also worth mentioning are an EP from S.F.'s Girls, the latest from Giant Sand, Hafdis Huld, the soundtrack to 127 Hours from A.R. Rhahman and greatest hits compilation from Scotland's Orange Juice.
Playlist: New Releases 11.23.10
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Stream / Purchase [mp3]
It's rare this late in the year to be forced to tear up your year-end best of list and start again, but I'm betting My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has pretty much just done that for more than a few lists. The dude is as talented as he is impetuous, but it's that direct line between his brain and his art that make much of his work so immediate. West moves from pain to exhileration in a heartbeat, producing goosebumps in the process. First single "Power," with the inspired King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" sample, cements West as the best producer in hip-hop, and the rap ain't bad either. "Runaway," "All of the Lights," "Devil in a New Dress"... all burgeoning classics, connecting together to make what might be the best hip-hop album of all time. And West might be the most amply prepared artist for the backlash that comes with such hubris.
More on the radar (and in the mp3 player) this week:
Orange Juice - Coals to Newcastle
Girls - Broken Dreams Club EP / "Heartbreaker" [mp3]
Regina Spektor - Live in London
Robyn - Body Talk
Hafdis Huld - Synchronised Swimmers
Giant Sand - Blurry Blue Mountain / "Fields of Green" [mp3]
A.R. Rahman - 127 Hours: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Tychozorente
Smashing Pumpkins - Teargarden By Kaleidyscope Vol. II / Free AOL Album Stream
Ke$ha - Cannibal / Free AOL Album Stream

Glee "Furt": Looking for something dumb to do

After a string of embarassing episodes, what a relief to find the Glee that so many connected with in the first season back on the air. Besides an inspired casting of Carol Burnett as Sue's mom (even though it was largely wasted), "Furt" brought back the most important ingredient in any good Glee episode: Kurt's dad Burt (Mike O'Malley). It also brought back some heart, and the wedding of Burt and Carole went a long way to keep me from deleting Glee from my DVR queue.
The Sue marrying herself storyline? Not so much, but we did get Carole Burnett in the deal, and anytime Sue the character is forced to become human, good things seem to follow.
Oh, and hey... I guess I'm supposed to remind you that Volume 4 of Glee: the Music is out next week. But you already knew that...

Chuck vs Phase Three: Watch Out for the Giant Blonde She-Male
As the back-end of a poorly set-up two-parter (hyphen much?), "vs Phase Three" was pretty good, focusing much of the episode on Sarah's journey to track down Chuck. Yvonne Strahovski got to flex some acting muscles we don't often see, showing range from rage to tears and, of course, kicking ass.
Even though it's been overused, Wolfmother's "Woman" was the perfect backing song for Sarah in the cage match and their assault on Chuck's kidnapper's fortress.

Music on TV This Week: The Beatle and the Stones
As we move headlong into the holiday season, expect to see a lot more specials, concert films and the like fill out the the schedule. For this shortened Thanksgiving week, there are some good ones as well, including PBS' LENNONNYC, which looks back at the former Beatle after his move to New York in 1971.
Director Michael Epstein's LENNONNYC comes at a time when John Lennon is on the minds of many, as he would've turned 70 years old last month, while next month marks the 30th anniversary of his death. Relying on old footage, never-before heard studio talkback of Lennon along with interviews with Yoko Ono, Elton John and others, the film is a touching look at a superstar trying to take a step out of the limelight and live life as a New Yorker. The film airs as part of PBS' American Masters series on Monday night.
Elsewhere, there are a couple concert documentaries making their respective debuts. On Thanksgiving, ABC is airing Beyonce: I Am... World Tour, featuring the athletic singer and guest appearances from Kanye West and hubbie Jay-Z. NBC counters with a pre-taped Taylor Swift special featuring performances of her bazillion selling Speak Now.
Finally, for Thanksgiving, VH1 properties are giving us three nights packed with The Rolling Stones concert films. On Wednesday, VH1 Classic airs the Hal Ashby (Shampoo, Harold & Maude) directed Let's Spend the Night Together, from their mega-selling 1981 arena tour. On Thanksgiving night, VH1 Classic airs two more, starting with Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones, featuring footage from their acclaimed Exile on Main Street tour in 1972, and then the special In Rehearsal: The Rolling Stones at Montreux, which features never-before aired footage of the band rehearsing for the Montreux festival from that very same year. Then on Friday, there's a simulcast on VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia of the 2008 Martin Scorsese concert documentary Shine a Light, taken from their 2006 tour.

Now Downloading: New Releases 11.16.10
The list for new releases shrinks as the compilations, box sets and reissues pile grows and grows. Bruce Springsteen's The Promise would make a great gift, as would the lovingly packaged reissue of Jim Sullivan's U.F.O.. When Black Friday falls you know it's got to be... don't let it fall on me.

I haven't had enough time with this to give this lost gem it's full due, so instead I'll direct you to the story behind the reissue, written in first person by my old friend Matt Sullivan, co-founder/owner of Light in the Attic Records. It reminds us of the lengths we'll go to for music that we love.
Matt's girlfriend is director Jennifer Maas (Wheedle's Groove) and she was along to film much of the adventure:

Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen do "Whip My Hair"
One of the highlights of an unbelievably cool night of Springsteen on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon was seeing Springsteen jump in, dressed up like 1980 version of himself with beard and tight afro, and singing with Fallon doing one of his Neil Young impersonation. With that, Fallon manages to top previous Neil Young impersonations and even the Justin Timberlake history of hip-hop thing.
The perfect way to start an incredible hour of television.

Sons of Anarchy "Bainne": Oh, where have you been, my blue eyed son?
So... are we finally done playing the game of "Where's Abel?" How about the waving around of guns by females tonight? Gemma holding a gun to a baby's head and Tara waving and inexplicably not using a gun against Salazar. WTF to both.
I guess if Sun Kil Moon's "Alesund" was playing in the background while I watched my son interact with his adoptive parents, I might be tempted to let him go as well. (Not really.) Singer Mark Kozelek sings about a Norwegian lass and a song that sprung from watching and hearing her. Like Jax, Kozelek's protagonist decides to walk into the night instead of performing the song on stage.

Chuck vs the Fear of Death:
"Ask yourself this, Chuck. Are you a spy, or a guy with a spy girlfriend."
- Rye
Stop me if you've heard this one before: Chuck loses the intersect. Sarah might be the reason he can't access it anymore. Chuck without the intersect isn't a real spy. Too soon to say if this is bad, played out, or just a sub par set up for a better Richard Chamberlain-led finish.
Meanwhile, it was nice having a mini Firefly reunion with Summer Glau and Adam Baldwin, but otherwise it was a pretty pointless use of Glau's unique talents (other than to plug her 2011 series The Cape, and, to a much lesser extent, Subway).

Ear on TV: Week of 11.15.10: Bruce Springsteen
Is it possible that the greatest album never released is seeing the light of day this week? Being a Springsteen fan means you've always taken it on faith that of the more than 50 songs recorded between 1975's Born to Run and 1978's Darkness at the Edge of Town, there was a tremendous album to be had. And with the double CD release of The Promise on Tuesday, we finally have confirmation of that.
To celebrate the great collection* of lost material, Bruce Springsteen will be taking over Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night, sitting down to be interviewed as well as play multiple selections from the release. It's not known yet if the E Street Band will be on hand, but even if they are, it's certainly in the realm of possibility that The Roots could be backing him on one or two of these songs. Certainly "Fire" (which The Pointer Sisters made into a hit) is in The Roots wheelhouse, but I'd also love to hear the doo-wop vocals and fun of "Ain't Good Enough For You" translated by The Best Band in Late Night's backing. And really, it just doesn't matter who he's got backing him on "Because the Night," as that will burn regardless (see video of performance from 1978).
*The Promise comes in a couple packages. One is just the double CD featuring the remastered lost recordings, and the other deluxe package is a 3CD-3DVD collection with a reissue of the original Darkness on the Edge of Town, HBO-aired documentary (The Promise: the Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town), special 2009 concert of Bruce & the E Street Band along with a DVD collecting live performances from 1976-78.
But Fallon and The Roots didn't stop with the Boss coup this week. They managed to capture pretty much every band I'd normally feature as the lede for this weekly column. On Monday, it's the heady Nick Cave's primal outlet Grinderman, who's second album Grinderman 2 continues where their debut left off: employing mid-life crisis to melt my face off. On Thursday, it's Ireland's The Frames, the original band for The Swell Season's Glen Hansard. Seeing the success of both The Swell Season and Mumford & Sons, a comeback for The Frames feels like a no-brainer, but you can't account for the fickle taste of today's music consumer.
Finally, for Fallon on Friday, critic's darling Sufjan Stevens makes a rare television appearance in support of his epic The Age of Adz. The concept album loosely tracks the life of freak painter Royal Robertson and features a broadening of Stevens intricately arranged tracks. Stevens has been putting on quite a show thus far on his tour, and it looks like we might expect some theatrics for his appearance on Fallon.

Now Downloading: New Releases 11.09.10
For it being the season of reissues and box sets, there hasn't that many to talk about (next week sees the big Bruce Springsteen The Promise), but at least we can crow about the best EP of the year coming out (from The Tallest Man on Earth). Other new releases of note include Bad Books, Cee-Lo Green, Kid Cudi, The Concretes, Shipping News, a Syd Barrett compilation and a deluxe reissue of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' best Damn the Torpedoes.
Playlist: New Releases 11.09.10
The Tallest Man on Earth - Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird
Stream / Purchase [mp3]
Sweden's Kristian Matsson is the latest artist to be straddled with the 'next Bob Dylan' moniker, but unlike most, his music doesn't pale in comparison. Earlier this year, The Wild Hunt was released to fantastic reviews but unlike most follow up EPs released in the same year, this has little to do with it. Written and recorded mostly while on tour, Sometimes the Blues is Just a Passing Bird is like the flash fiction version of a TMOE release, a taste of brilliance leaving you wanting more. It's an efficient display of stellar songwriting and features, what I believe to be, the first electric guitar on a TMOE release with the "The Dreamer" (which features the lyric pulled for the EP's title). Best EP of 2010.

Sons of Anarchy "Firinne": Some Medieval Shite
This terribly long saga of Find the Baby is almost to a close... we think. While it seemed to take forever to get to Belfast, it feels even longer for SAMCRO to get out of this "moss covered hell hole" (thank you, Opie). The seemingly unrelated storylines have made this season feel like a season of 24, where there's obviously a destination we're heading towards while Kurt Sutter & crew throw obstacles in our heroes path haphazardly to keep us all from reaching it before episode 13 (or 12, as the penultimate is oft to do).
There's only three episodes left to the season, so they had to start to shape things up a bit. So now we're finally getting some good John Teller in Ireland back story, and a return to Jax's issues with 'the patch' guided by his father's legacy text and more father-son relationship / Hamlet-like undercurrent. And then there's the unconscious incestual yearnings... Shakespearean much?
Musically, it was great to hear the short-lived UK garage rock dynamos The Beat Up (formerly The Beatings) with "Messed Up" as the opening jam. Their US debut (Black Rays Defence, recorded by MBV's Kevin Shields) arrived in 2005 and they toured with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Liberines and even a reunited Stooges. So much potential there, but they never made another album. Guitarist/vocalist Nick Pankhurst is currently a touring member of Duke Spirit while Dino Gollnick lends his bass expertise to Ladytron.

Glee "Never Been Kissed": Free Your Show and the Rest Will Follow
Glee has proven in the past that it's capable, in at least some manner of success, at taking on BIG ISSUES, but "Never Been Kissed" is just an unfortunate flop, and not the kind of flop that's admirable because "at least they tried." By playing it safe once again, Glee is stuck in between the net and the backcourt. And to top it off, the dangerous takeaway that some victims might gleam from tonight is that homophobic bullies are that way because they're secretly gay. And that an all boys academy can be, pardon the term, fruitopia -- where everything seems gay even if it's not. Yes, gay bullying is a problem that is worthy of tackling, but to flub it as bad as Glee does the issue no service. (And what in the world is going on with these b plots?)
Musically, the episode is a callback to the popular "Mash-up" episode from season one, but the significance of that pretty much got drowned in Kurt's, Bieste's and Puck's storylines. A part of me wished like hell that "Free Your Mind" was going to be a Funkadelic joint, and that the proverbial "ass (would) follow," but that's obviously expecting far too much from the less and less daring Glee.

Ear on TV: Week of 11.08.10: Cee-Lo Green
![]() |
| Cee-Lo Green plays Letterman and The Colbert Report |
Like with the phenomenon surrounding Gnarls Barkley "Crazy," it might be easy to forget that it's part of an album, and Lady Killer, Cee-Lo's third solo release, provides the perfect context for the expletive-filled release. Paying homage to classic Motown and Stax recordings, this is Green's most accessible release to date, and yes, "F*ck You" is the album's draw, even to the point of distraction. (Green will perform clean versions of the song on Letterman Monday and The Colbert Report Tuesday.)With internet memes moving at the speed of light, not only has the song become a radio hit (thanks to the unfortunate edit to "Forget You"), but it's also generated several covers that probably signal it's already past its prime. Last week William Shatner did his trademarked spoken word cover of "F*ck You" on Lopez Tonight (scroll down for video), bleeps and all, to prove grandpa has heard it. British pop songstress Eliza Doolittle videotaped a version of it backstage getting ready for a show in London, guaranteeing the UK hype machine has already digested it. And the final straw for the zeitgeist camel appeared last week when it was announced that Gwyneth Paltrow* will sing the radio edited version "Forget You" on Glee on next week's episode.
*Gwyneth Paltrow actually makes her network television singing debut this week, performing on the Country Music Awards Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, the pale whale Conan O'Brien returns this week with his new show and network, Conan on TBS, and it was only natural that he opens with Jack White as his musical guest, given their long history. This past summer, in fact, Conan O'Brien returned the favor, recording two limited edition singles for White's Detroit record label, Third Man. Other musical guests this week include Soundgarden (Tuesday,) and the Ben Harper-Joseph Arthur-Dhani Harrison collaboration Fistful of Mercy (Wednesday). It's great to Conan back, even if it were only to have another late night source for good live music.Picks for the week
